Susan E. Volkert

Susan Engelman Volkert is a partner in Teaneck office of DeCotiis.  Ms. Volkert is a member of the Labor and Employment, Healthcare and Litigation practice groups, and concentrates her practice on employment law and health law issues.

She has over 30 years’ experience representing management in a wide range of litigation, including employment discrimination, whistleblowing, harassment and employee benefit termination cases. In addition, Ms. Volkert provides counsel on workplace policies, compliance and other related employment issues.

She has litigated cases in virtually every forum – at the trial level and on appeal; as a trial attorney in both the U.S. Department of Justice and in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In the private sector, she has served as head counsel in representations of major international pharmaceutical and chemical companies, as well as in the public sector on behalf of municipalities and school boards.

In addition to her legal career, Ms. Volkert also spent several years as an executive and Deputy General Counsel at a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company. In this role, she implemented preventive law and compliance programs.

Ms. Volkert is a New Jersey native and has lived in North Caldwell for most of her adult life.   She is admitted to practice in two states, four Federal appellate courts, and the United States Supreme Court. She has appeared in many Federal district and appellate courts, as well as a variety of New Jersey state and administrative courts. She is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

She received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and received her J.D. cum laude from the University of Toledo, where she ranked first in her class and was Case and Comment Editor of the University of Toledo Law Review. As a law student, she wrote two Notes, on Search and Seizure and on the Fourth Amendment for the Review. She also co-wrote an article, Of Arterial Passageways through the Legal Process: the Right of Universal Access to Courts and Lawyering Services, 48 New York University Law Review 595 (1973), with Professor Lester Brickman. Following law school, she participated in the Department of Justice Honor Program. In addition to her law degree, Ms. Volkert was also awarded a Master of Law degree in Health Law from Seton Hall Law School.  More recently, she was the author of Telemedicine: Rx for the Future of Health Care, 6 University of Michigan Tele. & Technology Law Review 147 (2000)
